It’s August. The hot sticky summer air will slowly begin to cool, and the leaves will begin to change colors as the days shorten. The bells will ring, and students will flood school halls everywhere. These are the familiar sights, sounds, and feelings we get every year at this time.
Like clockwork, back-to-school season is in full swing, and for Apple, a host of new products—hardware and software—will be launched. The September event is highly anticipated across the tech world, and this year should include iPhone 14 (Opens in a new tab) as the cornerstone of the main presentation.
Do you think the September event is the only way Apple can make the school year work for it? Think again.
August builds anticipation for the Apple event in September
It starts with summer. July and August set the stage for the big September event rather modestly. Usually the news from the company is quieter, just like the hustle and bustle of everyday life slows down when the students are on summer vacation. But this is all by design.
Apple launched back-to-school deals in the summer to entice people to buy its products. Suddenly, parents and students alike are handed the requirements for their studies the following year. Do you need a new computer? Why don’t you pick up Best MacBook for Students (Opens in a new tab) while you are at it?
It’s by no means unique to Apple, but summer is where it really all begins.
September and October events
September and October are a flurry of activity for many families. School starts, which leads to the initiation of after-school activities, which in turn leads to the initiation of extra-curricular activities. It can be stressful, but for many people – especially students – it is exciting.
That’s why Apple kicks off in the fall to release its new technology. She jumps at the chance to take advantage of the excitement of going back to school before the long, cold winter (here in Canada anyway) lulls people into a kind of hibernation.
Just like the way your child’s basketball team gets started, Apple turns the key to the ignition for its annual plan.
Winter and holiday season
After the fall excitement is over, Apple is taking a more relaxed approach to winter. Normally, there aren’t many product releases (but we did get some good stuff back in November), but with the winter holidays coming around, Apple will have some great deals.
Probably A student in your life needs an iPad (Opens in a new tab) to complete their studies. maybe this New Apple Watch (Opens in a new tab) You can’t buy it in September all of a sudden it looks cute as a Christmas gift. Once again, Apple smartly builds each season to lead to those windows of time where people do a lot of shopping.
Spring event sowing seeds
The rest of winter is usually a little boring, but with the sun warming up and spring making its way to California, Apple is organizing a spring event.
Usually in March (although we also saw that in April), this event usually sows the seeds of the fall harvest. It will occasionally announce something new and exciting – like AirTags – but often shows the less glamorous products. The minimal upgrade to an Apple TV and a quick processor update to the base iPad are garnishes that keep you looking forward to the end of the school year. Or, in the case of Apple, WWDC.
WWDC Those seeds are blooming
While WWDC Primarily related to software and focused on developers, Apple knows exactly what it’s doing by putting all those ads in June.
The school year is coming to an end, and people are excited about summer, but most importantly, excited about the possibilities that the next school year will bring. Whether it’s graduating, changing schools, or moving into their careers, people hope for the best.
I can’t think of a better time to announce so many new features coming to iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and all the other platforms that will be available. When will it be available? That’s right, autumn. What before the fall? Summer, when you can get new deals on products from the last cycle when you start shopping for back to school. Thus, the Apple Technology cycle is about and going on in the future.
Familiarity brings comfort
The school-focused Apple course almost feels comfortable. Even if you don’t upgrade your hardware every year—which most people don’t—you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into based on the time of year. From there, you can decide to wait for something new to come out or just move on to the back-to-school or vacation deal to buy something new.
Apple uses the school year to its advantage every step of the way to ensure that people are constantly engaged in the buying process. Whether it’s eyeing new products or actually buying new hardware, Apple’s tech cycle follows a similar format, and it works.
