The technological battle in the coming years is likely to occur in the field of connected glasses. after announcing Google glasses And the Oppo Air Glass, this Digital tested for youIt’s Xiaomi’s turn to introduce its concept of connected glasses, the Mijia Glass Camera. A promising project in the drawers since 2021, but it is far from perfect.
set of functions
Xiaomi presents its augmented reality glasses as the perfect companion for everyday life. For this, it relies on cameras to capture any moment, with zoom to increase the possibilities. But the real added value of Mijia Glass lies in the presence of a screen. Among other things, a simultaneous translation service will be offered, using the same Google system. The device is currently reserved for the Chinese market, only English and Chinese are taken into account by this feature. In addition, the system for identifying animals and plants will be of interest to the most curious. Finally, the MicroLED display can also display GPS guidance in augmented reality, such as the head-up display for pedestrians or cyclists.
To achieve its goals, Xiaomi had to abandon its dream of offering glasses that fit into the mass. It is clear that Mijia Glass will not go unnoticed in everyday life. In order to accommodate all the technologies necessary for the proper operation of its glasses, Xiaomi had no other choice but to choose a fairly thick frame, installing various and diverse devices in each branch.
On the right is a Sony-designed MicroLED display, thanks to which various information can be displayed in augmented reality. MicroLED differs from OLED technology in terms of increased thinness and durability, but also by self-emitting diodes with a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours. The screen has a maximum brightness of 3000 nits with a pixel density of 3281 ppi.
On the left, there is a dual image sensor that makes it possible to capture the surrounding environment. The device consists of a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens with optical stabilization (OIS) and 5x optical or 15x hybrid optical zoom. A complete device that allows Mijia Glass camera wearers to take photos and movies, knowing that files can be transferred to the phone, via a companion app of course. Xiaomi has chosen to incorporate a small diode next to the lenses to indicate that they are shooting and to avoid potential abuse.
Added to this is also an octa-core Snapdragon SoC, accompanied by 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, as well as a 1020 mAh battery which, according to Xiaomi, will allow continuous shooting for 100 minutes on a single charge. Recharging is supposed to be fast because the recharge technology (up to only 10W) makes it possible to recover 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes. Good point, despite all these gadgets, Mijia Glass Camera weighs only 100g.
A product that will be funded through crowdfunding
Mijia Glass cameras are still far from the shelves, especially in France. Xiaomi has launched a crowdfunding program on the manufacturer’s online store, Xiaomi Youpin. Only one condition to participate: residency in China. To sign up and hope to get your glasses, you have to pay 2,499 yuan, or roughly 360 euros. And for those who did not take advantage of the special price under this fundraising campaign, the brand will make it possible to get the augmented reality glasses for 2,699 yuan, or approximately 390 euros. No information on marketing outside the Chinese borders has been filtered.
